When someone passes away it can be extremely difficult finding the right words to say, or to express how you are feeling. This can be even more so when sending a sympathy card or bereavement card. Here are some tips to help, and further below you will find some sample bereavement messages.
Simple words can bring real comfort and shows how much you care. Be genuine and most of all speak from the heart. If you do this you can’t really go wrong, and even if you don’t feel like you have said exactly what you wanted to it will be appreciated for being heartfelt. However, something as simple as “I’m so sorry for your loss” may be the best choice.
You will also want to consider how well you knew the person and how close you were. The more so then it may be appropriate to include and share some memories you have of them. Or think about exactly what they meant to you and include that. (Don’t forget to sign your last name as well. This is especially important if you have a common first name as more than one person may have sent a message or card and signed with that name too)
Avoid Saying:
-
“At least they aren’t suffering anymore”
“It was there time to go”
“I know how you feel”
“Time heals all wounds”
Or anything similar to those listed above. These could cause real offense, even if they are well intentioned.
However if you are still not confident with deciding what to say then use some of the bereavement messages we have provided below.
